Capturing Your Forever: Tips for Choosing the Perfect Wedding Photographer | Denver Wedding Photographer

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

As you plan for your big day, one of the most important decisions you will make is choosing the right wedding photographer. Your wedding day will be filled with many precious moments, and you want to make sure that they are captured perfectly so you can cherish them for years to come. From special details, to key moments, and all of the fun candids in between!

As a Denver, Colorado wedding photographer, I understand the importance of finding the perfect photographer for your special day. I’ve heard it all! Some great, some not so much.

In this blog post, I'll share some of my best tips for finding the right wedding photographer to fit you and why it's so important to choose a photographer who truly understands YOUR vision.

Why Choose a Professional Wedding Photographer?

I totally get that planning a wedding has many many costs involved, so it’s normal to try to cut costs where you can. But, while you may have a friend or family member who is willing to take photos for your wedding, it's important to remember that this is a once-in-a-lifetime event. You want to make sure that the photos are taken by a professional who has the experience and expertise to capture the moments you'll want to remember forever. Not to mention, someone who can lead you through the process so all you have to do is focus on actually enjoying your wedding day.

It can seem like a great idea at the time, but I’ve been on the other end of the conversation too often. I’ve actually had couples come to me with horror stories that their wedding photos didn’t turn out, the editing was awful, or worst case scenario, they actually never got their wedding photos back! I wish I was joking, but unfortunately I see this happening more and more.

Which leads me to my key tips for helping you choose the best professional wedding photographer for you wedding day.

Tips for Choosing the Best Wedding Photographer to Fit You

  1. Know your Style - First and foremost, I encourage you to get on IG or Pinterest and start exploring the types of wedding photos and editing style you love most. You’ll want to choose your photographer based on the style and look that you like first. Everything else flows from there.

  2. Research Photographer’s Portfolio - Once you know your preferred style, search for photographers who have that style and start making your list. Here’s the catch. Most of what you see on a photographer’s website are just the highlight reel of best photos. Any photographer can end up with one great photo, but only few can capture your entire wedding day well. If you don’t see full wedding galleries on their website, I encourage you to reach out to them and ask them to see full galleries of recent weddings. This way you can get a clear idea what you can expect for your wedding day if you choose to work with them.

  3. Read Reviews - This one kinda goes without saying nowadays. Check out online reviews from previous clients to see what they have to say about their experience working with this photographer. How did they say the whole process and experience was? What were they most excited about? Or what didn’t go so well?

  4. Consider Your Budget - Of course your budget has to be considered, but notice how it’s number 4 on the list. Wedding in general can be very expensive, and your wedding photographer will be a part of your cost. But, like I list here, I encourage you not to start with this — don’t just price shop. You want to make sure you find the right style you like, a well-captured wedding day portfolio, and vetting your choice of photographers through reviews, and THEN consider your budget to help narrow down to your top choices.

  5. Meet In-person - Last but not least, schedule an in-person consultation with your top choice photographers to get a sense of their personality and style. 99% of the time, this will be your deciding factor. It’s important to make sure you feel comfortable with your wedding photographer so you can trust them fully to do their job so you can focus on enjoying your day. You’ll also want to make sure the photographer you choose understands YOUR vision for your wedding day so you are happy with your wedding photos you can cherish for the rest of your life.
